The Common Council approved the Certification of Exemption from the Waukesha County Library Levy. This is an annual action that certifies the City will fund the library at a level that exempts citizens of Oconomowoc from paying the Waukesha County library tax.
The library’s request for a part-time programming assistant in 2020 did not proceed to the City’s personnel committee for consideration. This means the position will not be part of the library’s budget for 2020.
On August 21, there was a mandatory walk-through for vendors interested in submitting a proposal for the adult furnishings project. 12 vendors attended. Proposals are due by September 18 at 2 pm.
At the Friends board meeting on September 4, B. Bleck requested funding from the Friends to replace the cabinets and seating in library’s staff lounge. The Friends funded the lounge when the library was built.
On September 13 (rain date September 16) at 2 pm there will be a large safety drill at the library, which will disrupt service to patrons for about 20-30 minutes. We are letting patrons know in advance, so they can plan accordingly.
Staff learned of a new tool we can use in Polaris to streamline how we print labels for library materials. It takes out a step or two, and staff can print labels directly from Polaris, instead of re-entering label data.
The library hosted three days of in-person Trustee Training Week sessions. It was a nice chance to gather and learn together!
The quarterly Friends board meeting will be Wednesday September 4 at 7 pm. The Friends annual meeting will be Wednesday, September 18 at 7 pm.
The dates for the Friends book sale are set: October 11-13.
After Labor Day, the library will be open on Sundays from 1-4 pm.
The OPL catalog had a recent update, based on feedback from the CAFÉ User Survey earlier this year. There are now no buttons below the search bar, and search results sort by popularity instead of relevance. There were some tweaks to wording, as well.
In August, we completed the second and final phase of replacing staff telephones. Kudos to Lissa Radder for her hard work on that project.
We have installed an electronic people counter, which will eliminate the need for staff to check and reset the people counter manually each day. We will only count how many people enter the library building, instead of counting that number and how many people go through the security gate. The new people counter can run reports by the hour, day, or other time frame, which will be handy information.
We are learning a new payroll system, which will be a great improvement in efficiency.
We will post the ad for a new Circulation Supervisor on the first day of fall, Monday September 23. B. Bleck hopes to have a successor in place in time for them to overlap with Marilyn for at least a day or two, so Marilyn can show the new person the ropes. Marilyn’s last day will be sometime in December.
Staff have three mandatory trainings in the next month: CPR/First Aid, Fire Extinguisher, and Dementia Friendly business training.
In October, Jennie Fidler, Hope Kramer, Caitlin Schaffer, and B. Bleck will attend the Wisconsin Library Association conference in Wisconsin Dells. Jennie will present “Compact Outreach,” and B. Bleck will present “Giving Bad News” and “Defusing Tense Situations and Setting Effective Limits.” Lissa Radder will attend a library marketing conference in St. Louis in November.
The Planning Committee should meet in October to begin work on the 2020 Business Plan. We would welcome any trustees who are interested to join the Planning Committee!
The library hosted the DPW’s Stormwater Week display in mid-August. Dozens of families enjoyed the take-home DIY birdfeeder kits the DPW provided.
September is Library Card Sign-Up Month! Bridges Library System is part of a multi-library system campaign this year. You will likely see billboards in the area, and may hear radio ads, too. People who sign up for a new Costco account at the Pewaukee Costco and show their library card will receive a Costco gift card. Patrons who visit the OPL checkout desk will receive a free haircut or discount from Sport Clips.
SummerStage of Delafield is borrowing two chairs from the library for the set of Neil Simon’s “Rumors.” One last time for the chairs to shine before the furniture replacement project!
